Christmas is full of delicious treats and festive meals, but the changes in food, timing, and social settings can be challenging for someone with dementia. Here are some tips to help them enjoy meals in a comfortable way.
Stick to familiar foods: introduce a few traditional Christmas dishes, but keep most meals simple and familiar to avoid overwhelming them with new or complex flavours. Familiar dishes provide comfort and reduce confusion, helping them feel more at ease at the table.
Plan smaller, relaxed meals: big meals with multiple courses can be overwhelming, so consider serving smaller portions throughout the day. This allows your loved one to enjoy the festive food without feeling rushed or pressured to eat large amounts.
Create a calm eating environment: easier said than done at Christmas but try to minimise background noise and distractions, such as loud music or bustling conversation, to help them focus on their meal.
Keep tableware simple: brightly coloured plates with a plain background can help distinguish food from the plate, making it easier for someone with dementia to identify what’s in front of them. Avoid overly patterned tableware, which can be confusing.
Offer assistance, but respect independence: for those who may need help with cutting food or using utensils, offer assistance gently. Allow them as much independence as possible, as this can boost confidence and enjoyment.
Hydration matters: with all the excitement, it’s easy to overlook drinks. Keep water close by and remind them to sip regularly to stay hydrated
By keeping meals relaxed, familiar, and accommodating, you can help your loved one enjoy the flavours and spirit of Christmas without the stress.
