The festive season is a wonderful opportunity to bring warmth, familiarity, and joy to a loved one with dementia. Simple, meaningful activities can help them feel included, bring back happy memories and create a sense of connection with family. Here are some engaging, dementia-friendly activities to enjoy together:
Sing along to Christmas songs and carols
Music can be incredibly powerful for people with dementia, especially familiar songs from their past. Singing carols together, particularly classic tunes they might have known for years, can spark memories and lift their spirits. Choose a mix of upbeat and calming songs, and let them join in however they feel comfortable - whether singing along, tapping to the rhythm, or simply listening.
Create a Christmas memory album
Looking through family photos from past Christmases can be a lovely way to reminisce. Choose photos that show familiar faces, places, or pets. Focus on the joy of the moment rather than pressing them to remember details. Even just enjoying these pictures together can bring a sense of warmth and connection without pressure.
Decorate together
Whether it’s the Christmas tree, the living room, or just a small festive space, decorating can be a fun, hands-on activity. Let them help hang baubles, string tinsel, or place a few simple decorations. Consider using soft, easy-to-handle ornaments and avoid any that might be fragile or sharp to keep it safe and stress-free.
Help with simple food preparation
Cooking and food preparation can be both engaging and sensory. Involve your loved one in easy, safe tasks, such arranging biscuits on a plate, or stirring ingredients. Just be sure to keep tasks simple and manageable to avoid frustration or fatigue.
Make handmade Christmas cards or ornaments
Crafting can offer a creative outlet and provide a sense of accomplishment. Consider an activity like decorating cards with stickers or simple colouring, or making ornaments out of felt or cardboard. Encourage them to personalise each one, perhaps for family members and praise their efforts to build confidence and joy.
Take a festive walk
If the weather allows, go for a walk to look at Christmas lights in your area. It’s also a good opportunity to get some fresh air and gentle exercise.
Watch Christmas movies or classic shows
Watching a familiar film or show can bring back memories and create a cosy, shared experience. Choose classic, family-friendly options that match their attention span. Or, consider shorter clips and Christmas TV specials.
Involve them in gift wrapping
They might enjoy helping with small tasks like holding the ribbon, folding wrapping paper, or placing bows on presents. Wrapping gifts can be a social activity too, allowing you to chat as you work together.
