Caring for yourself this Christmas - tips for dementia carers

The festive season is often busy and emotional, especially when you’re caring for someone with dementia. While you want to make Christmas special for your loved one, it’s just as important to take care of yourself. Here are a few friendly tips to help you find balance and enjoy the season too!

  1. Set realistic expectations: Christmas may look different from previous years and that’s okay. Focus on simple, meaningful activities rather than big events and try not to put too much pressure on yourself to make everything perfect.

  2. Set boundaries - the festive season can be overwhelming so it’s important to remember that you don’t have to say yes to every event, request, or tradition. If attending large gatherings or hosting feels like too much, it’s perfectly fine to decline or suggest alternative plans.

  3. Prioritise rest and breaks: make sure you’re getting enough rest. If family or friends offer to help, take them up on it, even if it’s just for a short break. A walk, a cup of tea, or a quiet half-hour with a book can do wonders for your well-being.

  4. Plan quiet moments for both of you: the festive season can be overstimulating, so plan some calm, peaceful moments for you and your loved one. Enjoying a familiar carol together, sharing a cosy meal, or simply resting in a quiet room can help you both relax.

  5. Connect with others: reach out to family, friends, or even online support groups. Talking to others who understand your role as a carer can be uplifting and reassuring, especially during the holidays.

  6. Be kind to yourself: remember, you’re doing your best. Try to avoid self-criticism and take a moment to acknowledge all the love and care you give every day. Be gentle with yourself, and allow room for your own needs too.
